LPC drops conference opener to Chabot

1/7/09

After a successful nonconference season, the Hawks found the going a little tougher Wednesday night in their Coast Conference Norther Division opener, falling 61-52 to Chabot in Hayward.

LPC (16-3, No. 3 in Northern California, No. 7 in the state) scored only 24 points in the second half after leading 28-23 at halftime. The Hawks finished the game making only 4 of 14 free throws. Joe Faumuina led LPC with 13 points.

Chabot, meanwhile, improved to 13-9 overall.

LPC travels to Redwood City on Saturday to take on Cañada at 7 p.m.


 

Hawks defeat San Jose City in nonconference finale

LPC concluded its most successful nonconference season in its three-year history Saturday by beating host San Jose City 77-72.

The Hawks (No. 3 in Northern California, No. 8 in the state) won 16 of their 18 nonconference games. Their previous high nonconference victory total was 13 during the inaugural 2006-07 season.

Moreover, LPC's 16 victories so far are more than they won during the entire seasons of 2006-07 (15 victories) and 2007-08 (14 victories).

Against San Jose City (13-6), which entered as the No. 14-ranked team in NorCal, Willie Richardson scored 18 points, and Marc Traylor added 16. Teammates Nick Marshall and Joe Faumuina chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Hawks begin Coast Conference North Division play Jan. 7 when they travel to Hayward to take on Chabot (12-9, No. 10 in NorCal) at 7 p.m. LPC defeated the Gladiators 79-76 in the finals of the LPC Tipoff Classic on Nov. 9.


 

LPC beats Monterey Peninsula, improves to 15-2

The Hawks ended 2008 with their 15th victory Wednesday, defeating Monterey Peninsula 77-70 in a nonconference game in Livermore.

D'Juan Estis led LPC (15-2, No. 3 in Northern California, No. 8 in the state) with 14 points. Joe Faumuina scored 13 points, and Nick Marshall and Willie Richardson added 11 each.

The Hawks led 44-24 at halftime, but allowed Monterey (3-12) to get back into the game in the second half. The Lobos closed within seven points at 62-55 with 6:43 remaining, and it was only a five-point LPC lead at 73-68 with 47.6 seconds left before Estis scored on a dunk. Marc Traylor then added two free throws to seal the victory.

LPC finishes its nonconference schedule Jan. 3 when it travels to San Jose to take on San Jose City College at 3 p.m.


 

Hawks defeat DVC to win Chabot Classic

LPC squandered a 17-point second-half lead but held on to defeat Diablo Valley College 62-60 Sunday to win its second consecutive Chabot Classic championship in Hayward.

The Hawks (14-2, No. 4 in Northern California and No. 8 in the state) have now won three of their four tournaments this season.

LPC team picture after tournament titleSunday's victory did not come easily, although for a time in the second half, it looked like it would. LPC, which led 30-25 at halftime, opened the second half with eight straight points.

After a DVC three-pointer, the Hawks scored nine of the next 10 points to lead 47-31. Jeff Ford's steal and dunk, and Joe Faumuina's three-pointer capped the run.

It was 49-32 midway through the second half before DVC (9-5, No. 9 in NorCal, No. 18 in the state) began its comeback. The Vikings outscored LPC 23-10 to pull within 59-55 with 2:27 left.

Nick Marshall, tournament MVPWillie Richardson then scored on a drive at 2:03, but DVC scored the next five points, making it 61-60 with 37.3 seconds remaining. The Vikings had a chance to win but missed a shot with 2 seconds left, and Nick Marshall secured the rebound for the Hawks.

Marshall (21 points), named the tournament's MVP, was fouled and made one of two free throws for a two-point advantage. DVC could not get off a desperation shot after that.

Faumuina (15 points) and Ford (9 points) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Hawks' next game is Dec. 31 against Monterey Peninsula at 3 p.m. in Livermore.


 

LPC beats Cabrillo, plays DVC for Chabot title

12/20/08

The Hawks advanced to Sunday's championship game of the Chabot Classic by beating Cabrillo 86-74 Saturday night in Hayward.

Nick Marshall and Joe Faumuina led the Hawks with 22 points each. Marshall also collected eight rebounds, and Faumuina hit five 3-pointers. Teammate Jeff Ford added 12 points.

LPC (13-2, No. 4 in Northern California and No. 8 in the state) takes on Diablo Valley at 5 p.m. DVC (9-4, No. 9 in NorCal, No. 18 in the state) advanced with a 53-47 victory over host Chabot.

The Hawks defeated DVC last year en route to the tournament title.

Chabot and Cabrillo play in the third-place game at 3 p.m.


 

Hawks win third place in Skyline Classic

12/14/08

LPC returned to its winning ways Sunday, defeating host Skyline 77-68 in the third-place game of the Skyline Classic in San Bruno.

Marc Traylor and Willie Richardson led the Hawks (12-2) with 17 points each. D'Juan Estis, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 11 points. Nick Marshall grabbed 12 rebounds, and Joe Faumuina had 9 assists.

Cosumnes River won the championship game with a 74-54 victory over West Valley.

Next up for the Hawks is the Chabot Classic, which takes place Dec. 19-21 in Hayward. LPC gets a bye in the first round and will play the winner of Cabrillo and Redwoods at 7 p.m. Dec. 20.

The Hawks will be looking to defend the Chabot Classic championship they won last year.


 

LPC falls to Cosumnes River in semifinals

12/13/08

The Hawks' bid for a third straight tournament title ended Saturday when they lost 87-84 to Cosumnes River in the semifinals of the Skyline Classic in San Bruno.

Willie Richardson led the Hawks (11-2) with 19 points. Other double-figure scorers were Troy Lambert (16), D'Juan Estis (14), Nick Marshall (12), Joe Faumuina (11), and Marc Traylor (10).

LPC will play at 2 p.m. Sunday in the third-place game against host Skyline (7-5). Skyline fell 68-62 to West Valley in the other semfinal.

Cosumnes and West Valley will play in the championship game at 4 p.m.


 

Hawks rip Gavilan in 1st round of Skyline Classic

12/12/08

LPC built a commanding 38-15 halftime lead then cruised to an 82-40 victory over Gavilan in the first round of the Skyline Classic in San Bruno on Friday.

Joe Faumuina scored 11 points, and Willie Richardson and Dabrail Henton added 10 each for LPC, which improved its nonconference record to 11-1. D'Juan Estis, after a two-game absence because of an injury, contributed nine points.

The Hawks (No. 3 in Northern California and No. 6 in the state) face a tougher test Saturday when they take on Cosumnes River at 5 p.m. Cosumnes (8-4), which beat Napa Valley 68-65 Friday, is No. 15 in Northern California.

In other first-round games, West Valley beat Merced 72-70, and host Skyline defeated Marin 80-69.


 

Shorthanded LPC easily disposes of Marin

12/6/08

Even without two key players, the Hawks had little trouble with Marin on Saturday, defeating the winless Mariners 89-64 in a nonconference game in Livermore.

With Willie Richardson and D'Juan Estis out of action, LPC, ranked No. 2 in Northern California and No. 4 in the state, got 15 points from Dabrail Henton and Troy Lambert in improving its record to 10-1.

Marin (0-8) trailed 43-28 at halftime, and after the Hawks opened the second half with eight consecutive points, the game was essentially over.

Joe Faumuina and Xavier Lewis scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for LPC, which also got solid performances off the bench from Nick Marshall and Evan Sanzo-Davis.

The Hawks next play Dec. 12 in the Skyline Classic in San Bruno. Their first-round opponent will be Gavilan at 2 p.m. LPC defeated Gavilan 88-67 in the season opener.


 

Traylor leads Hawks over Solano

12/3/08

Marc Traylor led six LPC players in double figures with 20 points Wednesday night as the Hawks defeated Solano 91-81 in a nonconference game in Livermore.

Traylor made 9 of 11 shots from the floor, including all 5 of his attempts in the first half as LPC, ranked No. 2 in Northern California and No. 4 in the state, improved to 9-1.

Other double-figure scorers for the Hawks were Jeff Ford (16 points), Willie Richardson (15), Troy Lambert (12), Joe Faumuina (11), and Xavier Lewis (10).

LPC, coming off its first loss of the season at San Joaquin Delta on Monday, jumped out quickly against Solano (5-5). The Hawks led 13-2 and 19-6 before the Falcons steadily climbed back into the game.

LPC held a 41-34 halftime advantage, then began the second half with a 13-3 run to assume control again. The Hawks' biggest lead of the game came at 63-43 on a dunk by Traylor with 13 minutes remaining.

The Hawks played without injured center D'Juan Estis.

LPC's next game is Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. against Marin in Livermore.


 

LPC drops first game of season

12/1/08

The Hawks faced their toughest challenge of the season Monday night and came away with a 77-60 loss to San Joaquin Delta in a nonconference game in Stockton.

With the loss, LPC's unbeaten streak to start the season ends at eight. Jeff Ford led the Hawks (8-1, No. 2 in Northern California, No. 4 in the state) with 13 points, while Willie Richardson added 11.

Delta, meanwhile, improved to 8-1. The Mustangs are ranked No. 4 in NorCal and No. 7 in the state.

LPC's next game is Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. against Solano in Livermore.


 

Hawks beat Hartnell, unbeaten after eight

11/26/08

LPC broke open a close game early in the second half en route to an 88-72 victory over Hartnell in a nonconference game Wednesday night in Livermore.

Willie Richardson led the Hawks (8-0, No. 2 in Northern California and No. 3 in the state) with 23 points, while Jeff Ford added 17, and Joe Faumuina had 15.

Hartnell led 45-44 at halftime, but the Hawks scored 12 of the first 14 points in the second half to move ahead 56-47. The Panthers (2-5) hung around until Faumuina scored on a layup, and Ford followed with a three-point play to increase LPC's advantage to 77-64 with 5:43 left. Faumuina scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half.

The Hawks' next game is Dec. 1 when they travel to Stockton to take on San Joaquin Delta. Delta is ranked No. 3 in NorCal and No. 8 in the state.


 

No. 2 LPC hosts Hartnell on Wednesday night

11/25/08

The streaking Las Positas Hawks look to win their eighth straight game Wednesday, Nov. 26, when they take on Hartnell in a nonconference game at 6 p.m. in Livermore.

LPC, which has won its first seven games this season and two tournament titles already, is ranked No. 2 in Northern California. The Hawks moved up one spot in the state poll and now reside at No. 3.

Hartnell (2-4) has lost its last two games, including a 95-67 setback to Fresno, the top-ranked team in NorCal. The Panthers did, however, defeat No. 10 Foothill earlier in the season.


 

Hawks stay unbeaten, win Eagle Invitational title

11/22/08

Winning its seventh straight game to open the season, LPC claimed the Eagle Invitational championship Saturday by defeating Cuesta 79-75 in Ukiah.

Tournament MVP Joe Faumuina led the Hawks with 20 points, while Willie Richardson added 14, Troy Lambert had 11 and Jeff Ford had 10. Marc Traylor gave LPC a lift off the bench with 8 points, while D'Juan Estis provided stellar defensive play.

LPC led 77-75 in the game's closing seconds, but Cuesta (5-2) had the ball with a chance to tie or win. However, Richardson came up with a steal and dunk to secure the victory.

Richardson was named to the all-tournament along with Ford.

The victory gave the Hawks (7-0, No. 2 in Northern California and No. 4 in the state) their second consecutive tourney title after winning the LPC Tipoff Classic on Nov. 9.

LPC returns home for its next game, a 6 p.m. matchup Nov. 26 against Hartnell in Livermore.


 

Big second half lifts Hawks into title game

11/21/08

LPC stormed back from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Butte 70-52 Friday in the semifinals of the Eagle Invitational in Ukiah.

With the victory, the Hawks (6-0, No. 2 in Northern California and No. 4 in the state) will look to win their second tournament of the young season Saturday when they take on Cuesta in the 5 p.m. championship game.

LPC trailed Butte (3-3) 25-18 at halftime before outscoring the Roadrunners by 25 points in the second half. Troy Lambert led the Hawks with 17 points, while Joe Faumuina and Willie Richardson added 14 each, and D'Juan Estis had 10.

Cuesta (5-1) enters the title game after defeating El Camino Compton Center 90-59.


 

LPC defeats Siskiyous, plays Butte in semis

11/20/08

Willie Richardson led five Hawks players in double-figures as LPC defeated Siskiyous 85-75 Thursday in the first round of the Eagle Invitational in Ukiah.

The Hawks (5-0, No. 2 in Northern California and No. 4 in the state) take on Butte at 5 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Butte beat Marin 81-50 on Thursday.

Richardson finished with a team-high 21 points and was backed up by 15 from Jeff Ford, 11 from Troy Lambert and 10 each from Chris Hansen and Xavier Lewis. Richardson and Ford were both stellar from the free throw line, with Richardson making 8 of 9 and Ford hitting all nine of his foul shots.

In tonight's other semifinal, Cuesta plays El Camino Compton Center at 7 p.m.


 

Rising Hawks shoot up rankings

11/18/08

Unbeaten after four games, LPC has risen to new heights in the Northern California and state rankings.

The Hawks have jumped three spots in the NorCal rankings and now sit at No. 2. For the first-time ever, they received first-place votes, garnering four. Fresno holds the No. 1 ranking.

In the state poll, LPC went from No. 8 to No. 4 and also received its first four first-place votes. Fresno is also No. 1 in the state.

The Hawks next play in the Eagle Invitational at Mendocino College beginning Thursday. Their first-round game is at 4 p.m. against Siskiyous (3-4).


 

Faumuina shoots Hawks past Sac City

11/13/08

Joe Faumunia hit five three-pointers Thursday night as the Hawks stayed unbeaten with a 91-67 victory over host Sacramento City College in a nonconference game.

The Hawks (4-0, No. 8 in the state, No. 5 in Northern California) also got 15 points from Willie Richardson, 13 from Troy Lambert, and 11 from Jeff Ford.

On the defensive end, Lambert had six blocks, and LPC held Sac City to 33 percent shooting.

LPC has a week off before traveling to Ukiah to participate in the Eagle Invitational at Mendocino College. The Hawks' first-round game will be Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. against Siskiyous.


 

LPC wins Tipoff Classic championship

11/9/08

Tournament MVP Willie Richardson scored 23 points to lead the Hawks to a 79-76 victory over Chabot in the championship game of the LPC Tipoff Classic.

With the victory, the Hawks (3-0, No. 9 in the state, No. 5 in Northern California), claimed their second Tipoff Classic title in three years. They also earned their first-ever victory over Chabot (2-1, No. 12 in NorCal) after losing the first five matchups between the teams.

For a while, it appeared that a victory would come easily. LPC outscored the Gladiators 15-2 to end the first half with a 39-26 lead. It then scored the first eight points of the second half to increase the advantage to 47-26.

However, Chabot fought back to take a 61-60 lead with 7:20 left in the game. It was 66-66 before Xavier Lewis nailed a three-pointer to give the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch allowed LPC to hold off Chabot.

Troy Lambert backed up Richardson's 23 points with 18 of his own. Lewis and Jeff Ford added 10 each.

Lambert earned all-tournament honors, as did teammate Joe Faumuina.

In the third-place game, Los Medanos defeated Butte 88-73. Cosumnes River beat Columbia 89-76 for the consolation title.

Hawks beat LMC, advance to title game against Chabot

11/8/08

Xavier Lewis scored all 17 of his points in the second half to lead Las Positas to an 84-72 victory over Los Medanos on Saturday in the semifinals of the LPC Tipoff Classic.

LPC (2-0) advances to Sunday's 5 p.m. championship game against Chabot, a 60-58 overtime winner over Butte in the other semfinal.

The Hawks, ranked No. 9 in the state and No. 5 in Northern California, and Los Medanos (1-1, No. 11 in NorCal) were tied 53-53 with 8:20 left in the game before LPC ran off 12 straight points.

Lewis and Joe Faumuina had five points each during the spurt, and Marc Traylor added a floater in the lane. After that, Los Medanos never got closer than eight points.

Lewis' 17 points were a team high. Faumuina added 15, Willie Richardson scored 13, and Jeff Ford had 10. Troy Lambert came up big defensively, blocking nine shots and collecting 13 rebounds.

LPC will be looking for its second Tipoff Classic title in three years. It will also be looking to beat Chabot for the first time. LPC is 0-5 against the Gladiators.

Los Medanos will play Butte in Sunday's 3 p.m. third-place game. Cosumnes River, an 81-79 winner over De Anza on Saturday, will take on Columbia at 1 p.m. in the consolation game. Columbia defeated Gavilan 76-66.


 

Hawks win opener against Gavilan

11/7/08

Overcoming a slow first-half start, LPC roared back to defeat Gavilan 82-58 Friday night in the first round of the LPC Tipoff Classic in Livermore.

The season-opening victory puts the Hawks (1-0) into Saturday's 5 p.m. semifinal game against Los Medanos, an 88-67 winner over Columbia.

After trailing most of the first half, LPC finally pulled even with Gavilan (0-1) at 32-32 on two free throws by Troy Lambert. The Hawks went ahead 34-33 with 2 minutes left in the half after Jeff Ford connected on a pair of foul shots.

LPC (No. 9 in the state, No. 5 in Northern California) opened the second half with a 15-3 run to go up 53-37. The run was capped by an alley-oop dunk by Lambert off a pass from Willie Richardson.

Richardson finished with a team-high 16 points, while Lambert added 14, and teammate Marc Traylor had 10.

In other first-round games, Chabot (No. 12 in NorCal) defeated Cosumnes River (No. 20 state, 10 NorCal) 87-70, and Butte (No. 16 state, 8 NorCal) beat De Anza 83-68. Chabot and Butte play in the other semifinal Saturday at 7 p.m.

Cosumnes River faces De Anza at 1 p.m. Saturday, and Gavilan takes on Columbia at 3.


 

Tipoff Classic begins today

11/7/08

The Hawks, ranked No. 9 in the state and No. 5 in Northern Calfornia, open their season tonight against Gavilan at 6 p.m. in the first round of the 3rd annual LPC Tipoff Classic in Livermore.

Other first-round games pit Chabot (No. 12 in Northern California) vs. Cosumnes River (No. 20 in state, No. 10 in NorCal) at 2 p.m., De Anza vs. Butte (No. 16 in state, No. 8 in NorCal) at 4 p.m., and Columbia vs. Los Medanos (No. 11 in NorCal) at 8 p.m.

Action continues Saturday and Sunday.

Welcome to the LPC Men's Basketball site

The 2008-09 basketball season promises to be an exciting one for LPC. With a mixture of talented returning and new players, the Hawks are poised for the best season in their young, three-year history.

The season begins with the 3rd annual LPC Tipoff Classic on Nov. 7-9 in Livermore. Aside from the Hawks, Butte, Columbia, Cosumnes River, Chabot, DeAnza, Gavilan, and Los Medanos will participate in the tournament. LPC won the inaugural tourney two years ago and is looking to keep the championship trophy in Livermore again this year.

The Hawks' first-round game is at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 against Gavilan. View the tournament bracket (PDF). LPC enters as the 12th-ranked team in the Northern California preseason poll. Chabot is ranked No. 11, while Butte is No. 15.

During the nonconference season, the Hawks will play in three other tournaments: the Eagle Invitational at Mendocino College (Nov. 20-22), the Skyline Classic (Dec. 12-14) and the Chabot Classic (Dec. 19-21). One big addition to LPC's schedule this season is a Dec. 1 game at traditional power San Joaquin Delta.
